For Immediate Release: March 5, 2008
Contact: Tina Eichner, Managing Editor (303) 504-9223 x14
The Museum Store Association (MSA) will announce its Knowledge Standards at its annual Membership Meeting during the 53rd MSA Retail Conference & Expo April 12 – 15, 2008, in Tampa, FL. The MSA Knowledge Standards highlight the core knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the daily job responsibilities of a cultural commerce professional.
“This is an exciting time for our association and our entire community,” said Board President Lauren Chapin Salazar. “After months of work to establish the Knowledge Standards, we are ready to unveil them to our membership at our annual meeting in Tampa. Please join me at our membership meeting in Tampa as we launch this exciting program that will benefit the entire museum store community and the institutions we represent, by bringing increased value to our institutions in the way we conduct business each day.”
An educational program utilizing the Knowledge Standards will be developed and implemented throughout 2008 and 2009. The Knowledge Standards program will guide our members through the education and skills they need to operate their stores and serve their institutions at the highest professional standards. The application of the Knowledge Standards program at our cultural institutions will help museum stores to become a more integral part of the institution’s mission and success.
During the past year, a dedicated task force of MSA members has worked to identify and craft a program of knowledge and competencies to help define what it means to be a cultural commerce professional. Through multiple committee meetings, gathering feedback from chapters and evaluating a survey of the membership, the Knowledge Standards committee worked with a consultant to craft a detailed document to identify the knowledge and skills required to be a museum store professional.
MSA would like to thank the dedicated and hard working members of the Knowledge Standards Task Force for their commitment to this important project:
Gwen Benner, Milwaukee Art Museum
Lauren Chapin Salazar, Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens
David Duddy, DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park
Mary Hele, Minneapolis Institute of Arts
Laura Murphy, The Preservation Society of Newport County
Sallie Stutz, Brooklyn Museum
Beverly Barsook, Museum Store Association
